The Toronto Baby Show- My Picks For Top 10 Booths To Stop By

Alexis Reid

The Toronto Baby Show is a great spot for new and expecting parents to talk to parenting experts face to face, discover the best eco-friendly products for your baby, get a free massage and shop till you drop! You should plan on stopping by the Enercare Centre, Hall D at Exhibition Place on Oct 1st from 9 am- 6 pm and Oct 2nd from 10 am- 5 pm. This is my 4th time attending this show so I thought I would do a spot light on my favorite booths. Be sure to stop by the Eco Chic Movement booth and say hi. I will have “show special” prices for all of our products and the Baby Travel Set will be on sale for only $20, that’s a steal!

Top 10 Booths To Stop By At The Toronto Baby Show

  • Bear Bottoms- Makes using cloth diapers as easy as using disposables. Since 2006 they have been providing parents with an eco-friendly washing process that is hospital approved. Most diaper services use harsh chemicals that you do not want getting on your baby’s skin.

  • Dressed To Deliver- Born out of a mom’s frustration for the lack of functionality of the traditional hospital gown. Their 3 in 1 birthing gown has all the features of a hospital gown with discreet access for fetal monitoring, IVs and epidural administration, Caesarean incision inspection and healing access while allowing for immediate skin on skin after baby is born. It also works great for a home birth. The birthing gowns are designed so they can also be worn as a maternity and postpartum/nursing dress.

  • Evymama- Is Toronto’s best store for beautiful nursing bras (they don’t look like nursing bras!) and maternity clothing for pregnant and breastfeeding women. They support breastfeeding women in many ways. They rent hospital grade breast pumps and offer classes on a variety of topics including preparing to breastfeed. Their store is located at 1345 St Clair Ave West.

  • Healthy Moms TO- Has a FANTASTIC discount card program. Aviva Allen recognized the expense of living a healthy lifestyle in Toronto and partnered with other healthy and environmentally friendly companies that cater to young families. You can purchase your 2017 card at the show.

  • Dads With Attitude- I have walked by their booth a few times before at The Baby Show and always get a good chuckle. They are all about honoring this generation’s awesome fathers. Now that is a cause I can get behind!

  • Human + Mother- Brings parent’s stylish, Canadian made baby wearing wraps that are sustainably sourced from beachwood fibre and made by a process that generates little to no waste. If that wasn’t enough already they also donate 10% of all proceeds to a featured charity addressing women’s and children’s issues around the world. Their current featured charity is Circle of Health International.

  • Kids & Company- Strives to bring parents progressive child care options to help parents achieve a better work-life balance. They provide full-time, part-time and emergency back-up care for families. Their curriculum includes: music, science, pre-reading, art, and both structured and unstructured play.

  • Spiffy Naturals- Offers organic all natural cleaning products for parents. The home environment can be one of the most toxic places your child is exposed to. I recently did a blog post on this topic. They have even partnered with a local juice bar to collect the organic citrus rinds to use in their products. I will definitely be stopping by their booth to stock up on my cleaning products!

  • Wee Urban- Using certified organic cotton blends and low impact dyes to bring your baby eco-conscious style! Wee Urban steps away from the traditional pinks, blues and cute motifs and brings your baby to a whole new level of style. They also produce a brand of products that are handmade in Canada.

Hope to see you this weekend!

How to Detox in 5 Min Without Leaving Your Bathroom

How to Detox in 5 Min Without Leaving Your Bathroom

Alexis Reid

So far we have covered why we should detox, the top ways we are exposed to toxins that we aren’t aware of, and which food help versus hurt our detox potential, it’s time to talk about how we can help our skin to achieve its maximum detox potential.

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. It is a semi-permeable membrane meaning while some substances are stopped from going in, not everything is. This is the main reason it is so important to be mindful of what we put on our skin, as most of it gets absorbed and reaches the blood stream.

The skin also provides a large potential for detoxification, via sweating. Exercise is a critical component of detox as it allows us to sweat out and liberate toxins. In order for your skin to work as an efficient detox organ, the pores must be nice and open. In today’s blog I will cover two simple changes to make to your daily routine that will significantly increase your skin’s detox potential

  • Dry Skin Brushing- Takes only five minutes to do and has many health benefits including:
    1. Exfoliates Dead Skin- The friction of the dry skin brush helps to remove dead skin which unclogs pores allowing toxins that are trapped below the surface to be eliminated
    2. Stimulates the Lymph System- The pattern used for dry skin brushing helps encourage lymph back to the heart where it can be collected
    3. Reduces Cellulite- Dry skin brushing helps to stimulate cells, remove collection of fluid and increase collagen.
    4. Stress Relief- Similar to massage, touch from dry skin brushing can help to lower our stress hormone cortisol.
  • Epsom Salt Baths- Epsom salts are composed of magnesium sulphate. The sulphate component is used by the liver in to help make toxins more water soluble for excretion. Magnesium has a calming effect on the body and reduces the stress hormone cortisol.

Now that you know why you should do Dry Skin Brushing and Epsom Salt Baths here is how to do them!

Dry Skin Brushing How To’s

  • Use a natural bristle brush with a long handle
  • Remove clothing and stand in shower stall or bathtub
  • Do not wet skin
  • Start at the bottom of your feet and move in long sweeping gentle motions towards your heart
  • Brush each area several times, more lightly over sensitive areas
  • Once you have finished, shower or bathe as usual

Epsom Salt Bath How To’s

  • Add 2 cups of Epsom Salt to warm bath water
  • Stir with your hand to allow salts to absorb
  • Soak for at least 15 minutes for maximum benefit

I hope you find this little routine change easy to implement!

How to Detox Step 2: Foods to Include and Foods to Eliminate

How to Detox Step 2: Foods to Include and Foods to Eliminate

Alexis Reid

foods for detoxifying

Now that you are well on your way to leaning about why we should detox, and the top ways we are exposed to toxins that we don’t even know about, it’s time to talk about food! Food is a critical element in any detox. What you are putting into your system can either benefit or hinder your progress. I am sure many of you are already making a list of foods that will be off limits during a detox, but may not be thinking as much about those superstar foods that will help you get maximum benefit for your effort! Let’s get the tough part out of the way and go over the foods that you will need to avoid during your detox.

Foods to Avoid During Detox

  • Wheat- pasta, bread, cereal, baked goods made with white flour and white sugar, whole wheat products
  • Diary- milk, cheese, yogurt, cream
  • Sugar/Artificial Sugar- all processed sugars
  • Processed Foods- most contain processed sugars and additives
  • Alcohol- makes the liver have to work harder
  • Caffeine- taxing on liver during detox
  • Red Meat- very inflammatory, produces toxic waste products

Foods to Include During Detox

  • Garlic- Sulphur in garlic helps the liver in phase 2 detoxification, which helps make toxins water soluble so that they can be excreted
  • Brussel Sprouts- Also high in sulphur, Brussel sprouts are a member of the cruciferous family of vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, cabbage and kale. Cruciferous vegetables help to detoxify excess harmful estrogen.
  • Dandelion- Yes you heard me right J Dandelion either in a salad or in a tea form. Dandelion helps to increase bile formation and acts as a mild diuretic.
  • Spinach- Contains a high amount of glutathione, our most abundant anti-oxidant. Glutathione neutralizes free radicals and helps with the metabolism of carbohydrates and fat
  • Beets- Contain betalains which stimulate the production of glutathione and provide anti-cancer effects.

Last but not least is water. Drinking plenty of fresh water helps any toxins that are being liberated to be eliminated via urine and stool.

How to Detox Step 1: Get Rid Of Hidden Toxins

How to Detox Step 1: Get Rid Of Hidden Toxins

Alexis Reid

Now that you know why you should do a detox, it’s time to get started. The first logical step in any detox is to reduce and/or eliminate your exposure to toxins. There is no point in eating super clean and getting your liver to work more efficiently through vitamins and herbs if you are still exposing your body to all that junk! The most important part of any detox is to reduce the toxic load that is going it. If you skip this step, you are not going to experience the vast benefits of detox. It is hard to eliminate what you don’t know about. That is what we are going to cover today.

Top 5 Ways You Didn’t Know You Are Being Exposed to Toxins

  • Conventional Skin Care Products and Make Up- If you have been following the blog for a while, then this one won’t come as a surprise to you! The skin is our largest organ and it readily absorbs toxins (parabens, phthalates, and fragrance) that is found in these products. Choose safe natural alternatives like Eco Chic Movement products
  • Drinking Out Of Plastic Water Bottles- Chemicals contained in the plastic leech into the water, especially if the bottle gets warm. These chemicals are well known endocrine disruptors. Don’t be fooled by bottles that are BPA free. BPA is not the only toxin in these bottles to be concerned about.
  • Dry Cleaning- Conventional dry cleaners use a cocktail of cleaners including PREC, a known carcinogen. Choose solvent-free dry cleaners whenever possible. Never hang conventionally dry cleaned clothing in your closet, as it continues to off gas. It should be aired out outside or in the garage first. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toxic-dry-cleaning-chemical-is-canadas-top-eco-villain/article566142/
  • Cleaning Products- They aren’t so clean! Check out this video from Environmental Defence on the level of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) in cleaning products http://environmentaldefence.ca/report/the-dirty-truth-how-toxic-cleaning-products-are-putting-canadians-at-risk/ VOC’s have been shown to impact fetal development. Antibacterial products in particular have been linked to pre-term birth.
  • Change Your Shower Curtain- Vinyl shower curtains release more than 100 toxic chemicals, including VOC’s. A recent study found that shower curtains bought at Kmart and Target were tested and found to have VOC levels over 16 times that recommended for good indoor air quality. http://www.watoxics.org/news/vinyl-shower-curtains-dangerous-for-health-and-environment

Making these 5 simple changes can have a significant impact on the health of your family. Stay tuned for next week’s blog post where we will cover which foods to include and avoid to help your body’s natural detoxification systems.

What's The Deal With Detox?

What's The Deal With Detox?

Alexis Reid

Detox has become quite the buzz word in the last 5 years. What does detox even mean? Is it something that you should be doing? Is it just a trend? I will be answering all your detox questions in the next few weeks, starting today with “What is a detox and is it really necessary?”

What is a Detox?

The word detox has taken on so many meanings. It can be as simple as reducing your toxic exposures to something more extreme such as a 5-7 day juice cleanse. The theory behind detoxing is to reduce or eliminate the number of toxins coming into the body. One of the biggest questions I get asked about detoxing is “doesn’t my liver do that already on its own”. The simple answer is YES! Your liver is essentially the filter for your body. It works to make the toxins in your body more water soluble so that they can be eliminated via your urine and stool. Your liver is VERY busy. Along with filtering the blood and eliminating toxins the liver also

-Aids in processing nutrients that the intestines absorb

                -Breaking down and metabolizing alcohol

-Produces chemicals that help the blood to clot efficiently

                -Regulates blood sugar

-Destroys and “cleans up” old red blood cells.

Our liver’s have a tonne of work to do. In the past, before we were exposed to the 60,000 environmental toxins that have been introduced since World War II, our liver’s were able to keep up with the break down and elimination of toxins. Now our liver’s are having to work overtime. A detox can be beneficial as a way to greatly reduce toxin exposures for a period of time. During a detox it is important to give the liver the nutrients it needs to break down the toxins into the water soluble form so that they can be eliminated. One of the key messages I want to get across is DETOX DOESN’T HAVE TO BE EXTREME. You can benefit greatly from a food only detox, and it is a great place for beginners to start.

You Could Benefit From a Detox If You Have:

-Difficulty Losing Weight

-Acne

-Trouble Regulating Blood Sugar

-Constipation

-Low Energy

-Painful and/or Irregular Periods

-Brain Fog

-Bloating/Gas/Heartburn

In next week’s blog I will be talking about which foods to include and which to avoid while doing a detox.
